In honor of all my basketball playing kids...

Happy Birthday Stephen!

Today is the 34th birthday of my oldest son.
He is a miracle and a blessing. I was told I'd never have children. I was told that I did not ovulate and that if I did, it was a "bad egg" and would be deformed.
I got pregnant and had a miscarriage.... that is a whole 'nother story....
The doctor told me that it was a fluke and would never happen again and to plan not to have children.
So, hugsum and I decided to go on with our lives. First, we cried because we really wanted children. Then, we prayed a simple prayer and asked Father for children. Then we went on with our lives.
Meaning.... we decided
since we couldn't have children and since we were so in love, we wanted to DO something with our lives and help others. We decided to go back to college and complete our degrees and keep going. We were going to be Christian counselors and open our own practice and work together.
HOW? we decided to sell everything we had and purchase an extended van and have it converted into a motor home and we would go to college and plug into the school for water and power and live and get educated.
Makes perfect sense....
Anyway, (this is a long story and it really is about Son#1)
We began the process and sold EVERYTHING... china, silver, crystal, furniture (antique family heirlooms :( , and well, everything that would not fit into our vanhome.
We also got an early morning paper route with the Miami Herald. Our route was on Palm Beach in Florida... very exclusive and fun place... (and again I am on a rabbit trail)
I started noticing that I was getting VERY carsick on these early morning runs. I thought it was his stop/start driving...
Well, happily enough we found out that I was pregnant....
We continued to follow our plan to sell all and since we had our van in process, we went ahead with it. But, we did change our plans and realize that we needed a proper home for our child and we could not live in the van
We moved to Dallas, Texas and went to Dallas Baptist College. We managed apartments for a short time before we heard about Buckner Baptist Childrens Home. We moved in there the first of January to the third floor to be houseparents to 16 little boys between 5 and 10. They were so precious. We wanted so much to adopt one of them, but their rules forbid it...
Our baby was due the 10th... he was three weeks late... He was big... he was beautiful, he was perfect, he was a joy and a delight.
He has brought us much pleasure and prided in his life. He brings the life to the party, and the activity. He was never content to just sit around, but always loves having something going on and doing.
He is a blessing, and a joy, a man of faith. We love him and are very proud...
Happy Happy Birthday, Stephen!

Seven Things

Chel at Leaving a Legacy tagged me for this meme. I'm supposed to share 7 things about me and then tag 7 other people. Here goes:

1. I am the baby of my family. I have an older sister and brother.

2. I love the beach and warm weather. I hate cold weather.

3. My favorite part of any meal is usually the dessert. I don't normally have one, so when I do allow myself to eat any, I thoroughly enjoy every bite. At covered dish dinners (and I get to go to lots of them) I get a small serving of each dessert there - or as many as I can put on my little plate. That way I can taste them all and get my sugar fill... then I need to sleep for hours to get over the sugar.

4. I love to cook... but I enjoy eating out more. Mainly because I don't have to clean up the kitchen afterwards.

5. I drive a Toyota. It is my car of choice. If I could drive any car I wanted without consideration of cost, I'd still drive a Toyota - just a larger one :)

6. Most of my grocery money is spent on fruit. For breakfast every morning I eat a big bowl of mixed fruit. If I'm eating at home, I will eat fruit with every meal.

7. My husband got me a program to help me with decorating the house... inside and out. I have it on the computer, but it came with a HUGE manual to "help" use the program. I have not been able to figure it out and don't know how to use it. We are trying to figure out how to improve the outside and get some "curb appeal" because there is NONE!

Now, if you haven't done this, then you go ahead and do it. Most everyone I know has. Chel was kind enough to tag me... I tag YOU!

Ohhhh The Weather Outside is Frightful!

The pool... covered in sleet - it looks like snow, but it is sleet and ice!

This is the view from my kitchen and dining room.

This is the view from our front window.

This is what I'm watching... with a cup of coffee and a good book!

Great Product!

I got this in an email and found it fascintaing and so thought I'd share with you.

Water Displacement #40. The product began from a search for a rust preventative solvent and degreaser to protect missile parts. WD-40 was created in 1953 by three technicians at the San Diego Rocket Chemical Company. Its name comes from the project that was to find a 'water displacement' compound. They were successful with the fortieth formulation; thus WD-40. The Corvair Company bought it in bulk to protect their atlas missile parts.

Ken East (one of the original founders) says there is nothing in WD-40 that would hurt you. 'It is made from fish oil.'

When you read the 'shower door' part, try it. It's the first thing that has ever cleaned that spotty shower door. If yours is plastic, it works just as well as glass. Then try it on your stovetop. It is now shinier than it has ever been before.

36) Folks even spray it on their arms, hands, and knees to relieve arthritis pain.

37) Florida 's favorite use: 'cleans and removes Love Bugs from grills and bumpers.'

38) Protects the Statue of Liberty from the elements.

39) WD-40 attracts fish. Spray a LITTLE on live bait or lures and you will be catching the big one in no time.

40) Fire ant bites. It takes the sting away immediately and stops the itch.

41) WD-40 is great for removing crayon from walls. Spray on the mark and wipe with a clean rag.

42) If you've washed and dried a tube of lipstick with a load of laundry, saturate the lipstick spots with WD-40 and re-wash. Presto! Lipstick is gone!

43) If you spray WD-40 on the distributor cap, it will displace the moisture and allow the car to start.

Keep a can of WD-40 in your kitchen cabinet over the stove. It is good for oven burns or any other type of burn. It takes the burned feeling away and heals with NO scarring.

Winter Pool Play

Yesterday during our one warm day of 75* a friendly squirrel enjoyed our pool. (today it is far from warm and they are predicting ice tonight!)

Meanwhile, Andy was asleep on the back of the chair... otherwise we would have been able to watch a chase. Andy hasn't gone on the pool cover, but he might if he saw that squirrel out there. He is faithful to run out every morning and chase away all birds and squirrels from our back yard. It is his duty to make sure we are free from all danger! We are so protected!

Bible Study

God's goodness to me is wonderful. I had been struggled with leading a Bible study at this time in my life. I was overwhelmed and stressed out just thinking about it. I mean, I literally panicked when I thought about it.
I was so torn because I love to teach Bible studies. I get so much out of it and I have missed the communion and time in the Word and time with special people as we study together and grow.
At the same time, right now I am stretched and in the middle of a few other things. The accuser beat me up telling me that I was disobedient, and hard hearted and had thrown away my faith and calling - among many other things he lied to me about... oh the guilt and condemnation was horrible!!!!
I prayed and asked for prayer... I finally go peace that it was "okay" for me not to teach at this time.
From my blog about it, I got so many great ideas and much encouragement.
Hugsum is leading it. He got the series from Mayberry and is excited about it.
Later I'll lead one... (that's not procrastination, it's permission)
What a relief, what a load off, what a joy and pleasure to be free and not feel guilty.
God is good to me!

Disease in your head?

Here is a quote from one of the books that I'm reading about longevity. It is from the premise that aging starts at birth (duh!) and that if you can keep your brain young, you can keep your body younger.

"Brain-body medicine has changed the way we think about and ultimately diagnose disease. The irritable bowel syndrome you thought you had can now be traced to an anxiety disorder; the dementia your grandmother suffered from may have been undiagnosed depression; the carbohydrate addiction you once faced turned out to be a dopamine imbalance; or the fibromyalgia your uncle was diagnosed with was a result of a serotonin deficiency. All of these conditions can improve once the source of the problem is recognized."

It is certainly something to think about. I think there might really be something to it. I'm going to keep reading and researching all this and I'll let you know as I find more things.

Look Younger Quick

Unless you are VERY young, you probably are trying to look younger - or at least not older. Even though I am very proud of every day of my 59 years.... I don't especially want to LOOK like I'm approaching 60.

I want to look and be the best I can.

The easiest and quickest way to look younger and feel better is to stand up straight. Yeah, it is that easy. You can look 5 to 10 pounds lighter and years younger if you will just stand up straight and hold your stomach in. Yep... easy schmeesy!

Didn't cost you a thing. Besides, when you use good posture, you are enabling you insides to line up and give some relief to those organs that are getting squashed and twisted and cramped because you slump... By giving them room to "be" where they are supposed to be and have the room they need you are also helping your health, circulation, and breathing.

You will have more energy and more confidence and you will be surprised how others treat you because you stand up straight, shoulders back, chin up, chest out, stomach in.

And don't forget to SMILE! (remember, you are never fully dressed without a smile!)

Who said that natural health had to be weird and hard to swallow?

So, your assignment for today is to watch your posture and smile! (more later on how your attitude will effect your health)

New Age Stuff

In my studies to find out about living longer and better I come across lots of Eastern Religion type things and new age stuff. Not so much in the courses from my school, but in my research.

I realized that these other people are not Christians... therefore, they have no hope for life after death or eternal life with a Savior.

Because of their nonbelief, these new age nonbelievers have done some study and come up with some really good information for all of us to tap into that can help us live on this earth longer and better...

Then, WE have a great life eternally! Before we get to eternity, I have to think that if we are still around then there is something special for us to do in this life. I also think that we need to have a mission or purpose to inspire us to live a long healthy life. There is no need for us to just live a long time for nothing.

All that to say, don't discount some funny sounding things just because it is different. Eat the hay and spit out the stubble... (hay is fiber and makes you a "regular" person... ). Apply and use what you feel comfortable with doing. (like the neti pot for helping stopped up sinus problems)

I'll continue with more and more... meanwhile, think about why you are here... there IS a reason!

So, How Old Are You?

In some of my research I was asked the question. Of course, I was thinking of my age in years...
Then, I continued to read that the important thing is not your chronological age, but your physical age.
I don't care how young your skin and brain are, if your heart is 90, then you are 90.
Scary thought....
So, find out the age of each part of your body and then work on increasing the life span of that part. You will then be on the road to becoming more youthful...

More to come...

I know, I know... You've Been Missing Me...

Yeah, sorry...
I have not been around as much as I had planned to this year. I've been a little busy.
What? You have too????
Oh, I should have said that I have been "fruitful" since "busy" is not a good word to use (according to Joyce Meyer).

I am currently having fun with my grandchildren... Love LOVE it!

Plus, I am in the middle (actually just beginning) of doing research on my dissertation. That very word scares me. It has been so long since I did any sort of research paper and this is a big mama!

So, if I am preoccupied and a little spacey and distant - that is why.

Please hang close and I'll share some of my interesting findings with you. I'm sure that you will love them since my subject is "Steps to Longevity". Yeah, we all need that one.

I believe as David said in Psalms that "my youth is restored as the eagles". I also believe that we have a part in it and some things we need to do to restore our youth!

If you have any good books, articles, wisdom, etc I'd love it. Also, if you have and suggestions on how to go about collecting and organizing and writing all this ...

Thanks for sticking around... I'll be in and out so check me out again...
Blessings!

Happy Birthday, John

Well, it was thirty one years ago today... you can read about this here... it tells the story, so I won't retell it. (you are very welcome, John)

I am so blessed to have such a wonderful son. He is so thoughtful and considerate. He has a wonderful wife and little girl, Kate. ... and they are expecting their 2nd in July.

We feel blessed.

I just want to wish him a very special birthday. May this be the best ever! You have blessed us and have honored us. We love you so much!

Lunch Memories

I was reading Linda over at 2nd Cup of Coffee and she was talking about the fun school lunches.

It brought back a flood of memories, which I won't go into... except for one.

My mother fixed my lunch every day when I was in high school. I was a "picky" eater (so I was told) and did not like anything they fixed at school. So, mama in her wisdom, decided not to waste any more lunch money and to just fix me a lunch.

She would sometimes come through with a good surprise... but, mostly I just gave my lunch to my friends. Especially one, who NEVER bought her lunch, or brought anything. (It wasn't that she couldn't afford it, she was quite wealthy - just "cheap".) Well, Sally (for lack of remembering her real name) made a point of sitting next to me everyday and drooling over my lunch. She would just take whatever she wanted - even if it was something that I really wanted. She didn't bother to ask and just assumed that it was "hers". Until one day...

About the time that I was getting really fed up with it something happened. You see, I'm not real aggressive and had a tendency to be run over by pushy people.

My brother had taken someone to the Atlanta airport. While there he wandered through one of the shops and picked up some special candy.

So, I sneaked a couple of pieces and put them in my lunch box. I could hardly wait for lunch that day. I just acted normal and pretended to eat and "hide" the special candy. But eagle eye Sally immediately dove for them. I tried to talk her out of eating them... I told her that she really won't like them... but, she latched on and began to eat them.

I let her. Yes, I did. I can't even say that I am ashamed of myself. I even really enjoyed it. I made a point to let her eat all the candy and then asked her if they were good. She said they were "okay"... a little crunchy...

I also made sure that everyone around was watching and listening... She asked what kind of candy it was. I calmly said, oh, chocolate covered ants and bees and grasshoppers....

It was a priceless glorious moment in time!

Sally got up and RAN to the bathroom and threw up.

She was still my friend, but she never ate my lunch again.

Thankfully, I have grown and matured and would not do that to my friends again. I'm so thankful for God's goodness and mercy toward me and growth...

Dilemma

I'm torn...
In past times I have loved and enjoyed leading Bible studies, teaching Sunday School and also weight loss groups. I have spent hours and hours digging into the Word and preparing. It was so very rewarding. I loved every minute of study and sharing.

I loved the relationships that were formed and grew during this heart sharing time.
In the past few years I have gradually pulled back and not done this. Part of it has been the Sunday schedule that prevented me from being a part of Sunday School, the work schedule, the lack of interest and my own school load.

Where we are pastoring now, they do not have any Bible study. I have been asked (by hugsum) to please start one. I have to admit that I panicked. I immediately became stressed. I do NOT want to commit to leading one.

It isn't that I don't want to DO a Bible study - it is that I don't want to LEAD one there.

I had already figured out that 1/3 of my life is spent in our weekend parsonage. To lead a Bible study there would mean that I would need to go up another night a week. I can't imagine how I can work that into my already "fruitful" schedule.

My dilemma comes from the guilt that I feel in not doing something for God. I am already committed to doing so many other things. Have I over committed myself to things I should not be doing? They are all necessary and things that I know I'm to do.

My faith is weak here... I do not feel that I can add one more thing to my life right now.
My heart says that I should never say "no" to sharing God's Word.... my flesh screams "I CAN'T DO THIS!"

I'll let you know how it turns out....
Are you in the same boat?

Tuesday - Trash Day

I began to realize that I have more trash than is readily gathered up... it isn't so obvious.

I need to get the trash out of my life - things like negative thinking.
things like bad habits
bad eating
unproductivity
being busy and not fruitful...

so, I'm doing some digging and gathering and throwing out. There are so many things that zap my time and energy that are unproductive . They may be "fun" or "enjoyable" but they prevent me from accomplishing what I need to - like eating empty calories. All those calories do bring me lots of yummy goodness - but in reality they are normally doing my body harm. They do things like make me fat or sluggish and even in a bad mood.

SOOOOO, what am I going to do? Be intentional and not just automatic. In other words, I plan to pay attention to what I'm doing, saying, eating. I know it will make a huge difference once I get the trash out of my life. Just think how much better the house feels when all the trash is taken out... My life will also feel free and better...

Aren't you excited? Wanna join me?

Newness

This is a new year - duh! The joy and fun of the past few weeks has been overwhelming. This is a new year and I want to do new things.

I have been so "fruitful" lately that I have not had much time to post. I plan to change that - well, I still plan to be "fruitful", I just plan to post more. I also plan to add some new fun things and learn how to add interest and pictures and videos and slide shows.

I decided that my ignorance and lack of understanding has held me back in many ways - not just blogging. It has just been more evident to me in blogging.

So, Linda (at 2nd Cup) I would love to join in the picture carnival.... I guess I need to get started taking pictures and learn how to make a fun slide show...

Next (again Linda at 2nd Cup) I need to learn to do the vlog and get out of my comfort zone!

I want to learn to cook new foods and try new recipes.

I want to go new places and meet new people.

I do not want a stale life. I want a full life with meaning and purpose..........

What changes do you want to make?
